How to Avoid Additional Charges on LTL Shipments
Common Reasons for Extra Charges:
- Re-weigh Fee: You will incur additional costs if the actual weight of your shipment differs from the booked weight. Accurate weight declaration is crucial to avoid this fee.
- Re-classification Fees: Ensure the freight class/NMFC# matches your items' actual class. Utilize our "Estimate Class" feature during quoting to avoid discrepancies.
- Re-consignment Fees: This fee applies when the shipment is rerouted in transit or the provided Bill of Lading is not used.
- Oversize/Overlength Fee: Shipments over 8 feet in length may attract this fee. Include dimensions in your quote to avoid surprises.
- Lift-gate Service: Necessary when the loading or unloading location lacks a dock. Remember, using a lift-gate may affect your transit time.
- Residential Pickup/Delivery: Fees apply if the location is a non-commercial address, or a business not visibly labeled. Ensure the business name is clear on the bill of lading.
- Limited Access: Locations like camps, schools, and military bases might incur this fee due to accessibility challenges. Confirm the nature of the location beforehand.
- Bill of Lading (BOL) Adjustments: Changes in shipment details like address or piece count post-booking can lead to adjustments based on the initial quote.
Determining Freight Class:
Freight classification is managed by the NMFTA, considering density, storability, liability, and handling. Use our "Estimate Class" button to help predict your freight class and contact us with any questions.
Understanding Estimated Transit Time:
Transit times are on business days, excluding the pickup day, weekends, and holidays. For instance, a shipment picked up on Wednesday with a 3-day transit estimate would arrive the following Monday.
Tracking Your Shipment:
You will receive updates via email. Additionally, track your shipment using the BOL#, Customer PO#, or Shipper Reference# on our homepage.
Benefits of Upgrading to Guaranteed Service:
This service ensures you won't be charged for the guarantee if the carrier fails to meet the transit time, ideal for urgent deliveries.
Ensuring Same-Day Pickup:
Typically, a 2-4 hour notice is required for pickups at standard businesses with docks. Locations like CFS Stations need at least 24 hour’s notice. Note that same-day pickups are not guaranteed.
Managing Your Bill of Lading (BOL):
Ensure the BOL is sent from your TMS to your shipper before pickup. It's then the shipper's responsibility to hand it to the truck driver upon arrival to avoid re-consignment fees.
Impact of Accessorial Services on Transit Time:
Services such as lift-gate use, pre-arranged appointments, or residential deliveries might extend the transit time due to additional preparations needed by the carrier or locations involved.
